I agree.
What you put in a FLAC file will be a lossless rendition of the original file, so if it was lossy it will still be lossy (of course). I hope the OP knows what everyone is on about, and hasn't been deterred.
Do some people not know FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec?
Even on an old PPC G5 mac I have, running OSX 10.5 I can play FLAC files using XBMC or VLC, and there is SURELY more choice of free FLAC players on a contemporary Apple computer!

Even from a lossy source the file remains lossless as nothing about the original has been altered in any way. Semantics or not. The file doesn't change and it's a codec not a container like say mkv. The file doesn't change (did I mention that?) it remains a lossless copy of whatever kind of file you care to use.

Michael mate,
I have never had my nits so pecked to death. :)
You can believe all xiph.org have to say about anything, if you like, but it will give you no end of grief in the end.
OK flac is a 'codec'.
All I'm trying to get across here is that anything can be converted into a flac and therefore it is very dangerous to believe any flac file is 'lossless' as in not from a lossy source.
That is all, nothing more and nothing less.
I will not be engaging in any further nit picking with you, I have a life :)

To: surroundsound@googlegroups.comOK let's not get too nit-picky about semantics. Any flac file is not necessarily a lossless file, as it might have an empty3 source which is severely lossy.
Flac is a lossless audio carrier in that whatever one puts inside it does not suffer loss on replay, but if it is an empty3 inside then one has to be very cautious about calling the flac file lossless!
I believe that you are mistaken with respect to FLAC. FLAC is a codec. Xiph.org, the originator of the format, seems to be quite clear about this. There are installables that reflect this reality. Also a formal specification. FLAC encoding and decoding is, by definition, always lossless.
I think that you are confusing FLAC with OGG, also from Xiph.org. I believe that OGG is a container often used in conjunction with the Opus, Vorbis (audio) and Theora (video) codecs.

Further, FLAC is open source. There are likely resources that allow it's use within DAWs if desired.

To: surroundsound@googlegroups.comIf you want to play FLAC on Mac, you'd better to convert FLAC to MP3, AAC, AC3, M4A, AIFF, etc.
Here is a guide to help you do this job at: http://www.faasoft.com/articles/flac-to-mp3.html
This guide applies to:
1. Convert FLAC to MP3, WAV, AAC, AC3, DTS, AU, AIFF, and etc;
2. Convert other audio formats to FLAC;
3. Extract audio from video files.--
