RE: Re: [SurroundSound] Re: convert flac to mac...

Accoring to XiPh.org:
Notable features of FLAC:
  • Lossless: The encoding of audio (PCM) data incurs no loss of information...
Further....
FLAC stands out as the fastest and most widely supported lossless audio codec, and the only one that at once is non-proprietary, is unencumbered by patents, has an open-source reference implementation, has a well documented format and API, and has several other independent implementations.
Of course, people can and do transcode media from lossless formats into FLAC. However, FLAC remains, in and of itself, lossless.

I have a substantial library of music ripped from CD to FLAC for use on a media server. FLACs play just fine on my Android devices, Linux systems, Windows systems & Logitech Squeezeboxes. With the addition of a small I/O filter I can load FLACs into Adobe Audition.

Flac is NOT inherently lossless it is merely a carrier for audio and some people convert empty3 to flac.

FLAC being lossless converting to a lossy format seems a bit defeatist. There are ways to play FLACs on a Mac, even from within iTunes.

Further, FLAC is open source. There are likely resources that allow it's use within DAWs if desired.

If you want to play FLAC on Mac, you'd better to convert FLAC to MP3, AAC, AC3, M4A, AIFF, etc.

Here is a guide to help you do this job at: http://www.faasoft.com/articles/flac-to-mp3.html

This guide applies to:

1. Convert FLAC to MP3, WAV, AAC, AC3, DTS, AU, AIFF, and etc;
2. Convert other audio formats to FLAC;
3. Extract audio from video files.
