HBO is following its own timetable in announcing the cast of the second season of True Detective. Filming on the eight-episode season has already begun in California. Meanwhile, the pay cable network has just made the second casting announcement, confirming Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kirsch and Kelly Reilly. In the first announcement, the network announced Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. All five are series regulars.

The eight-episode second season of the Nic Pizzolatto crime drama revolves around three police officers (Farrell, Kitsch and McAdams) and a career criminal (Vaughn) who must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder. Here are the official descriptions for Kirsch, McAdams and Reilly's characters.

Rachel McAdams as Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff's detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves.

Taylor Kitsch as Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened.

Kelly Reilly as Jordan, Frank Semyon's (Vaughn) wife, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions.

In addition to the five regulars, True Detective has cast a slew of recurring players for Season 2, including Michael Irby, Abigail Spencer , Leven Rambin, Riley Smith, Lolita Davidovich, James Frain, Adria Arjona, Chrsitian Campbell, Michael Hyatt and Yara Martinez
