OBERSDORF, Germany — Canadian ice dancers Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje won the gold medal Saturday at the Nebelhorn Trophy figure-skating event.
The world championship silver medallists from Waterloo, Ont., unveiled their new short and free programs and it resulted in scoring 165.32 points. Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates were second with 163.73 while Germans Nelli Zhiganshina and Alexander Gazsi were third with 147.10.
"We were very happy with how the competition concluded," said Weaver. "We were very calm in our free dance and although it’s new and fresh and early in the season we were able to put out a solid performance.
"This is a program that is more difficult than what we’ve done in the past. It requires harder training and harder concentration and we are glad to see we are going in the right direction."
It was the second career international victory for the Canadians, who won the Four Continents event in 2010.
Elisabeth Paradis of Loretteville, Que., and Francois-Xavier Ouellette of Laval, Que., were fifth while Veronik Mallet of Sept-Iles, Que., was seventh in the women’s event.
Meanwhile, ice dancers Mackenzie Bent of Uxbridge, Ont., and Garrett MacKeen of Oshawa, Ont., finished second at the Tallinn Cup in Tallinn, Estonia. It’s the fifth stop on the ISU junior grand prix circuit.
Russians Anna Yanovskaya and Sergey Mozgov won the event with 152.00 points. Bent and MacKeen, who first after the short dance, were next with 144.51.
Alexandra Nazarova and Maxim Nikitin of Ukraine were third with 128.59.
