ANKARA, Turkey — Kim Gaucher of Mission, B.C., Tamara Tatham of Brampton, Ont., and Miah-Marie Langlois of Windsor, Ont., had 11 points each as Canada downed Mozambique 69-54 on Saturday at the FIBA Women’s World Championship.
Although Canada dominated play in the first half, it only led 35-32 at the break.
"We were tight in the first quarter and made adjustments to extend our lead in the second," said Lisa Thomaidis, Canada’s head coach. "Mozambique was a quality opponent. We have respect for them and they are here (at World’s) for a reason. "
Canada returned from intermission refocused, limiting Mozambique to only 10 points in the third quarter to establish a 53-42 lead heading into the final period.
Mozambique would rally within the last remaining minutes of the fourth but Canada held on for the victory.
