{allcanada} Winnipeg magician wows but doesn't win 'Britain's Got Talent' finale

WINNIPEG -- Darcy Oake pulled out all the stops, but the 26-year-old Winnipeg magician just couldn't conjure up a win at Britain's Got Talent.

Despite pulling off a death-defying stunt during the televised finale on Saturday and wowing the judges, Oake finished fifth overall, garnering 8.5% of the votes. Vocal group Collabro were the runaway winners, with 26.5% of the votes.

Securely strapped into a straitjacket, Oake was suspended by a burning rope upside down six metres above the stage in an open bear trap with just 53 seconds in which to escape. Oake narrowly missed the closing teeth of the bear trap, dropping to the floor just as the rope gave way to the flames and the trap clamped shut.

The judges were all blown away by Oake's performance, with the notoriously tough Simon Cowell saying, "We are witnessing the birth of a star."

Oake, the son of CBC sportscaster Scott Oake, had vowed that if he won, he would use the winnings -- about half a million dollars -- to fund a rehab centre for recovering addicts. His older brother, Bruce, died from an accidental drug overdose in Calgary.
