PHILADELPHIA -- The Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues swapped defensemen at the 2014 NHL Draft Saturday morning.

Carl Gunnarsson is on his way to the Blues in exchange for Roman Polak. The Blues also acquired the No. 94 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft as part of the trade.

Gunnarsson and Polak have two years remaining on their contracts. Gunnarsson's contract carries a salary-cap charge of $3.15 million; Polak's contract is worth $2.75 million annually.

Gunnarsson, who is 27, had 17 points and a plus-12 rating in 80 games this season. He's a 6-foot-2, 196-pound mobile defenseman who joins a defense corps that already includes mobile players such as Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk.

He has 86 points in 304 career NHL games, all with the Maple Leafs.

Polak, who is 28, gives the Maple Leafs a bigger, stay-at-home defenseman. A right-handed shot, the 6-0, 236-pound defenseman had 13 points and a plus-3 rating in 72 games.
