ANTWERP, Belgium — Canada suffered its first loss of the 2014 FIVB World League intercontinental round, falling to Belgium in four sets on Sunday.
Set scores were 33-31, 25-12, 21-25, and 25-23. Canada heads back home to face Belgium next weekend in Vancouver with a 3-1 record.
Canada looked strong at the outset of the match and both teams fought hard through the first set, which included a 50-second-long rally, before Belgium took the set.
Belgium cruised to take the second set by 13 points. Canada rebounded to win the third set, but it couldn’t sustain the momentum, dropping the fourth and final set.
Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon, who entered the game at the beginning of the third set, had 14 points for Canada. Victoria’s Fred Winters also had 14 points while Adam Simac of Ottawa added 10 more to Canada’s effort.
Belgium’s Bram Van den Dries led with 24 kills for his team.
Canada beat Belgium in five sets on Friday, gaining two of three possible points. Belgium got a full three points for Sunday’s four-set win, and is now the leader of Pool C with a three-point advantage over Canada and a seven-point lead over Australia and Finland.
