It’s something many were convinced of and this week Georges St-Pierre admitted it.

The former UFC welterweight champion said he wasn’t motivated heading into his narrow split decision win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 last November.

“I’m going to tell you the truth. I’ve been doing this for a long time, since I was 19. I’m 33 now. When I fought [Carlos] Condit, I was very hungry. I was very happy to be there. I wanted to do it a lot. [Nick] Diaz, a little bit less. And the last training camp I had with [Johny] Hendricks, I didn’t have the same motivation. It went down, and I need to get back to that feeling of hunger,” St-Pierre told Ground and Pound TV in a recent interview in Germany.

St-Pierre has been laying low since vacating his UFC title in December, but took the time to speak to media this week in Germany. He is in Berlin to corner his friend and Tristar Gym teammate Francis Carmont for his co-main event fight against C.B. Dollaway at UFC Fight Night: Munoz vs Mousasi Saturday.

The Canadian superstar reiterated that he has not retired from mixed martial arts, but he won’t be returning to the UFC anytime soon.

“I need to get the motivation back. It’s hard because it’s always the same routine, the same thing. And I need to fix some things in my life to make it more efficient. Once everything can be done, maybe I’ll come back,” St-Pierre said. “We’ll see how it goes. But I can’t say yes, I can’t say no, because I just don’t know right now.”

Another obstacle St-Pierre needs to overcome before he ever steps foot in the Octagon again is recovering from his second ACL surgery. He underwent the procedure in April.

“I’m focusing on my rehab to get back as fast as I can and in the best shape. From there, we’ll see what’s going to happen,” St-Pierre said. “[Rehab] is going very well. I had the same procedure on my right knee and my leg came back stronger so now I’m doing my left. It will be the same thing and I will have two good knees this time. It’s going to be a good thing.”

UFC president Dana White believes St-Pierre will have no problem fully recovering from his latest surgery.

“I think he’s going to want to [come back to the UFC]. We’ll see what happens,” White recently told UFC Central. “I would say right now Georges St-Pierre is still in his prime…The doctors he’s seeing and the therapy he’s getting — he’s getting the best you can get — so I think he’s going to make a full recovery and he’s going to be fine.”

When asked if he thinks St-Pierre has what it takes to win his title back, White responded: “That division right now is full of killers. Absolute killers. We’ll see what happens, but anything is possible of course.”
