MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens needed all of Rene Bourque's hat trick plus a couple more goals Tuesday to stay alive in the Eastern Conference Final.

Now they're one win away from hosting a Game 7 for the right to go to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Canadiens chased New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist in the second period and won a wild Game 5, 7-4 at Bell Centre. Bourque scored three goals, Alex Galchenyuk, Max Pacioretty, Tomas Plekanec and David Desharnais had one each.

Six goals were scored in the second period, three by each team.

The Rangers lead the best-of-7 series 3-2 with Game 6 at Madison Square Garden on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, RDS). Game 7 would be Saturday here at Bell Centre.

The Canadiens have twice rallied to win a Stanley Cup Playoff series after falling behind 3-1, but never in the conference final. They last did it in 2010 in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Washington Capitals.

Andrei Markov chipped in with three assists, and Dale Weise and Lars Eller each had two. Canadiens goalie Dustin Tokarski stopped 23 of 27 shots.

Rangers center Derek Stepan scored two goals after missing Game 4 with a broken jaw. He played with a plastic guard attached to his helmet to protect his injury. Chris Kreider had a goal and three assists, Rick Nash had a goal and an assist, and Ryan McDonagh had two assists.

Bourque scored twice in the second period, bracketing his goals around three in a span of 4:24 for the Rangers, before completing his hat trick 6:33 into the third period.

His goal with 4:50 remaining in the second period was the game-winner. It stopped a Rangers rally that started shortly after Cam Talbot replaced Lundqvist, who gave up four goals on 18 shots before getting pulled with 11:02 remaining in the second.

Nash, Stepan and Kreider scored to tie the game 4-4 with 5:58 remaining in the period. Nash started the comeback when his shot attempt from below the left circle hit Montreal defenseman Josh Gorges in the slot and went through Tokarski's five-hole at 9:48.

Stepan scored his second goal off a rebound in the slot at 12:06, and Kreider scored on the power play 2:06 later off a nice passing sequence from Derick Brassard to McDonagh to Kreider, who had inside position in the slot on Markov.

Kreider's goal came with Tomas Plekanec in the penalty box for embellishment. Kreider had an assist on the Rangers' first three goals.

Bourque put Montreal back in front with his second goal of the second period on a blocker-side shot past Talbot at 15:10. A crisp passing sequence had the puck going from Eller to Weise then to Bourque for a 5-4 lead.

Bourque's goal in the third period also came off a pretty pass from Weise. He chipped the puck ahead to Bourque, who got in the zone behind Kreider and beat Talbot with a glove-side shot from between the circles.

Weise left the game briefly after taking a high, illegal hit from Rangers defenseman John Moore. Weise's helmet popped off and he had to be held up by Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban.

It was announced that Moore received a five-minute elbowing major and a match penalty, which carries an automatic suspension from further competition until Commissioner Gary Bettman rules on the issue, according to Rule 21 of the NHL Rulebook.

Max Pacioretty and Bourque scored 3:10 apart to give Montreal a 4-1 lead 6:54 into the second. Pacioretty's goal, a shot from the right circle past Lundqvist, came off a highlight-reel pass from Brendan Gallagher.

Gallagher was falling as he made a spin-o-rama move to get himself away from Rangers defenseman Marc Staal on the left-wing half-wall, but he managed to make a tape-to-tape backhand pass across the zone to Pacioretty, who scored his fifth goal of the playoffs.

Bourque scored from the slot seconds after a Montreal power play expired. Mats Zuccarello, who was in the box for goalie interference, was racing toward Bourque when he got the puck in the slot, but the Rangers forward got there too late.

The Canadiens had a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by Galchenyuk and Plekanec separated by a goal from Stepan.

Galchenyuk gave Montreal the 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 1:48, when he deflected Subban's slap shot from the left point past Lundqvist. Zuccarello tried to rim the puck up the wall and out, but Markov kept it in at the right point. He moved the puck across to Subban for a one-timer that hit off Galchenyuk, who was alone in front of the net.

Montreal was on the power play because Kreider tripped Subban 22 seconds into the game.

The Rangers nearly tied it about eight minutes later, when Martin St. Louis and Carl Hagelin went in on a 2-on-1 against Francis Bouillon. St. Louis fed Hagelin, whose shot appeared targeted for the back of the net until Tokarski got his stick over and got a piece of the puck with his shaft, deflecting it off the netting behind the net at 9:39.

New York did tie the game 65 seconds after that save, when Stepan's shot from below the Stanley Cup Playoffs logo split Bouillon and Nathan Beaulieu and dipped under Tokarski's blocker at 10:44.

The game was tied for 100 seconds. Plekanec's sneaky hard shot between Staal and Anton Stralman beat Lundqvist on the glove side to give Montreal a 2-1 lead at 12:24. Galchenyuk made a move around Brassard then got the puck up the ice to Brian Gionta. He passed it to the middle for Plekanec, who got off a hard shot across his body without much room because Staal and Stralman were closing on him.
