GOETZIS, Austria — Kai Kazmirek of Germany led the men’s decathlon after the opening day of the IAAF World Challenge Hypo Meeting on Saturday, and last year’s winner Brianne Theisen-Eaton built a slim lead in the women’s heptathlon.

Kazmirek trailed two-time world champion Trey Hardee of the United States after three events but won the high jump and the 400 metres. The European under-23 champion tops the field with 4,478 points.

Hardee, who won the event three years ago, is second with 4,361 and Yordani Garcia of Cuba third with 4,260.

Theisen-Eaton gained 3,938 points from the first four events to lead Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Britain by 15 points and Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium by 18.

Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands, who won the 100 hurdles and the 200, is fourth with 3,865.
