April 25. Oh, the irony.
The leading candidate said to be in line for the Vancouver Canucks' general manager job had his named etched onto the Stanley Cup in 2011.
Jim Benning, the assistant general manager of the Boston Bruins, is presumed to be the front-runner for Mike Gillis's old job based on new Canucks president Trevor Linden's admiration for the Bruins organization and the fact Linden reportedly met Thursday with Boston president Cam Neely.
Benning’s final four seasons as NHL defenceman were played in Vancouver, the last two alongside a sensational kid named Linden. Since his playing days, Benning served as a scout for the Anaheim Ducks and Buffalo Sabres before taking a head office job with the Bruins. One has to figure there are worse managers to learn from than Peter Chiarelli, one of the best in the business. But it's Benning's scouting pedigree that could prove valuable ahead of an important draft for the Canucks.

“I’m trying to take time to think through things strategically,” Linden told the Vancouver Province. “I have a lot of balls in the air, a lot of different pieces of the puzzle. It’s about taking time on each one and moving forward each day.

“I know from the outside people are wondering what’s going on. But this isn’t a two-week project. The ripple effect of each decision is significant. I have to understand things in the full situation. not just a sliver here or a sliver there.”
