EDMONTON -- Sean Monahan scored his second goal of the game at 1:50 of overtime to lift the Calgary Flames to a 2-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place on Saturday night.
Monahan took a pass from Paul Byron in front of the net and slipped a shot through Oilers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, who finished with 28 saves.
Reto Berra made 21 saves for the Flames, allowing only a third-period goal by David Perron.
Monahan opened the scoring at 10:15 of the first period. The Flames' rookie was able to gather a loose puck in front of the net and snap a shot over the shoulder of Bryzgalov. Monahan has a team-leading 18 goals for the Flames this season.
The Oilers had a couple of good chances to get on the board in the first period, but Boyd Gordon was unable to convert into an empty net from a sharp angle and Nick Schultz had his shot go through Berra only to be cleared off the goal line.
The Oilers went into the game having been shut out 3-0 by the Minnesota Wild Thursday. It was the eighth time this season the team had been shut out.
The Flames had also been shut out in their previous contest, losing 2-0 to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. They too have been blanked eight times this season.
After a quiet second period, Perron snapped the Oilers' scoring drought at 9:43 of the third period, firing a shot over Berra's shoulder. The Oilers had gone 160:47 without a goal. They had not scored since Taylor Hall beat Cory Schneider at 11:30 of the first period of a 2-1 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils prior to the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
The Oilers continue their five-game homestand Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators. The Flames visit the Minnesota Wild on Monday.
