The Toronto Maple Leafs have shored up their defence, acquiring Tim Gleason from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenceman John-Michael Liles and prospect blueliner Dennis Robertson.
The trade is pending a call to the National Hockey League.
The 30-year-old Gleason has one assist in 17 games with the Hurricanes in the 2013-14 NHL season.
A veteran of 10 NHL seasons, Gleason has scored 15 goals and 113 assists in 616 career games with the Hurricanes and Los Angeles Kings. He was originally drafted 23rd overall at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.
Gleason has two years remaining on his contract after 2013-14 worth an average annual value of $4 million.
Liles, 33, has split this season between the Maple Leafs and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. In six games with the Leafs this season he has posted a minus-2 rating.
In 627 career games with the Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche, Liles has scored 77 goals and added 236 assists. He was originally selected in the fifth round (159th overall) at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Avalanche.
Liles has two years remaining on his contract beyond this season worth an average annual value of $3.875 million.
Robertson currently plays for the Brown Bears of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and has three goals and 17 assists in 36 games. The Fort St. John, BC, native was drafted by the Maple Leafs in the sixth round (173rd overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
