TORONTO — Nate Robinson had 23 points off the bench as the Denver Nuggets defeated the Toronto Raptors 112-98 at the Air Canada Centre on Sunday.
The diminutive guard hit five three-pointers on the afternoon, including back-to-back shots from the arc with just over two minutes to go, as the Nuggets (10-6) pulled away to win their sixth straight game.
Rudy Gay led the Raptors (6-10) with 23 points, while Jonas Valanciunas added 18. DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry each had 17 points for the home side. It was Toronto's third straight loss.
Denver's bench scoring spelled the difference. The Nuggets reserves outscored their Raptors counterparts 72-16.
Timofey Mozgov had 16 off the bench for Denver while starting guard Ty Lawson also had 16 points.
Denver had a 76-72 lead after a see-saw third quarter that featured four lead changes.
Finishing 1-3 on their longest home stand of the season, the Raptors now head out West for the next week, visiting the Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers.
Denver took a 47-45 lead into the locker room after a sloppy first half by both teams.
The Nuggets shot just 40 per cent from the field in the opening 24 minutes but that was better than the Raptors, who shot an ice cold 16-for-44, or 36 per cent, field goal percentage in the first half.
Each team also turned the ball over seven times in the first half and struggled from the foul line.
DeRozan led all scorers at the break with 12 points but missed his final five shot attempts of the half.
Toronto, closing out a four-game home stand, came out flying, opening up a 15-point lead eight minutes into the first quarter on the strength of a swarming defence and some deadly field goal shooting.
DeRozan hit his first four shots and Lowry hit his initial two attempts from beyond the three-point arc.
But the Nuggets went on a 13-4 run over the final 3:56 of the first quarter to cut the lead to 31-25.
