If Martin Brodeur had his pick on Canada's No. 1 goalie for the Sochi Olympics, it would be Roberto Luongo.
The future Hall of Famer told TSN's sister station in Quebec RDS on Monday that while Luongo and Montreal Canadiens netminder Carey Price have been the country's top two candidates, the Vancouver Canucks' goaltender should get the edge for the starting job.
"(Price) and Roberto Luongo are the two strongest candidates since the beginning of the year," Brodeur told RDS after the Devils' 3-2 loss to Montreal. "In my book, the No. 1 goaltending spot belongs to Roberto Luongo.
"The job is his and he can't lose it as I did in 2010 in Vancouver. Price must be patient, try to have the best season possible and the chance to take part in Sochi will be a very good experience for him."
Luongo, Brodeur's goaltending partner at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, backstopped Canada to four straight victories against Germany, Russia, Slovakia and the United States en route to a gold medal on home ice.
In 24 games this season, Luongo has an 11-8-5 record with a 2.41 goals-against average and .911 save percentage with two shutouts. Price is 12-8-2 in 22 games played this season with a 2.00 goals-against average and .937 save percentage.
