cott Moore, president of broadcasting at Rogers Media, explained to The Montreal Gazette Wednesday afternoon how Saturday nights will look on television beginning next season in the wake of the mammoth NHL TV deal signed with Rogers.
In addition to Hockey Night in Canada on CBC, there will also be HNIC games on Rogers-owned City and Sportsnet as well, at the same time as the CBC broadcast. So there will be three more-or-less-simultaneous games Saturday nights featuring Canadian teams. Then there will be two other games on the other Sportsnet channels, featuring matchups between U.S. teams.
"So you've got what I call March Madness for hockey every single Saturday night," Moore said. "That's the beauty of having the number of outlets and platforms that we do. As a Montreal Canadiens fan, when they're up 7-nothing over somebody, then I can maybe tune to the Ottawa Senators versus Pittsburgh game to see if that's a better game. It's really an unprecedented choice. Hockey fans will get more hockey on more platforms and certainly, in the case of Saturday night, at no additional cost. Most sports fans already subscribe to Sportsnet and Sportsnet One."
And what will happen when the current deal with CBC expires in four years?
"We want to have the flexibility to go to where the fans are and right now the best place to reach fans is Saturday night on CBC," Moore said. "It's the most broadly distributed network in the country. It reaches 98 per cent of television households and it would be silly for anyone to think they could match their success. But in four years, we don't know if conventional television will be as strong. We don't know if people will be watching on their NHL app or with their Google 3D glasses. So if conventional television stays strong — and I hope it does because we have conventional stations — there's no reason we wouldn't renew this deal for four more years."
