TORONTO — Montreal's Francoise Abanda captured her first career professional-level title Friday, as she teamed with American partner Victoria Duval to win the doubles title at the Tevlin Challenger event.
The unseeded duo, who finished as runners-up at last week's Saguenay National Bank Challenger in Quebec City, defeated the No. 2-seeded pair of Melanie Oudin and Jessica Pegula 7-6(5), 2-6, 11-9.
After splitting the first two sets, Abanda and Duval came back from 8-2 down on a tiebreaker to secure the win.
"It feels really good to win my first title, and especially to do it at a $50K in Canada and come back like we did in the tiebreaker," said Abanda, 16. "It was a fun match, and I'm really happy to win with Vicky, I think we make a good team."
Duval also advanced into the singles semifinals on Friday, ousting No. 2 seed Mandy Minella of Luxembourg 6-3, 7-5. The No. 7 seed will next face No. 4-seeded Czech Andrea Hlavackova, who won 6-2, 6-2 over No. 5 Alize Lim of France.
Oudin is still alive in the singles draw thanks to a 6-3, 6-4 quarter-final victory over her doubles partner Pegula, the No. 8 seed, earlier in the day. After going up 4-0 in the second set, Pegula began engineering a comeback before No. 3 seed Oudin was finally able to close out the win.
Oudin will take on top-seeded Timea Babos of Hungary ins the semifinals. Babos who was able to get past No. 6 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in a contest that saw both players struggle at times.
The Tevlin Challenger is currently in its ninth year of existence. Past champions include Eugenie Bouchard, Aleksandra Wozniak, Heather Watson, and Sabine Lisicki.
