[SurroundSound] Why (Almost) Everything You Thought You Knew About Bit Depth Is Probably Wrong

A professional mixing engineer recently turned me on to this article:

http://www.sonicscoop.com/2013/08/29/why-almost-everything-you-thought-you-knew-about-bit-depth-is-probably-wrong/

And this video shows you precisely why changing the bit depth does almost nothing to improve (or deteriorate) an audio signal, as well as clearly demonstrates why the digital waveform 'stairstep' metaphor is just wrong. It's fascinating!!

I'm not trying to stir things up! Though I generally sit on the side of the fence that says more bits = better sound, the reality is that my aging ears are no longer able to make such a distinction, which is why I have avoided these discussions. However this article and especially the video has caused me to reconsider what I previously believed. I suspect now that there are perhaps other unknown factors at play which should be taken into account, not just bit depth.

/sitting back to enjoy the discussion...
