Hi EoH welcome to the group.

Hi all,

I think some of you already know me ;-) (I see some familiar names here !)
For those who don't.......

In 1999 a friend sent me a surround version of a CD, made by him I was impressed with what he made.
I wanted to make the same things too, but it took ages for him to inform me how he did it. When I finally got some minimal instructions and figured out the rest, I made
a guide and placed it on Doom9. It was an immediate succes and for a long time it was the most visited thread in the audio section on Doom9.
The method I used that time to upmix stereo to surround was fully based on Ambisonics.
Together with a Swiss friend we made several methos through the years, where I had the ideas and he the capabilty to transform my sometimes wild ideas into code.
FWIW he made software to decode SQ and QS into MCH WAV, which was very welcome for all those Quad-boys ;-)

We're now 13 years further and the routines to upmix became better and better and I believe it will be difficult to add something extra to the routines we use the most.
Results vary, just as stereo mixes vary, but with a good stereomix, you get 5.1 that's almost Retail quality.

Of course we can never beat disccrete channels, but we're close....very close !
And, not all Retail is good ! There are a lot of albums where I prefer a good upmix instead of the Retail. Especially the Retail where the rears are no more than some reverb.

And although I like separation a lot , I'm also still a big fan of Ambisonics, because of the excellent soundquality it delivers. Bad sound on your stereo ? Ambisonics will improve it !

I have a large collection, more than 4000 DTS CD's , more than 400 DTS Dvd's and more than 400 DVDA's ..... and it's still growing every day ;-)

I think this is enough for an introduction and I will first read everything posted here and perhaps jump into some of the discussions.

I also have a website with guides to make your own upmixes, but I don't want my first post to be seen as SPAM, so the address will be published after a request ;-)

Nice to be part of this group !!

kind regards,

EoH
