WINNIPEG — The hockey season hasn't started yet but a rising star with the Winnipeg Jets has already suffered a hit from the Manitoba government.

Lawyers for the province appeared in Court of Queen's Bench last Thursday, seeking to garnishee the wages of Evander Kane for refusing to pay fines from two outstanding traffic tickets.

The government won a default judgment against the speedy winger for just over $650 in fines and costs.

Court documents obtained by the Winnipeg Free Press show Kane was issued the tickets last year for driving without a valid licence and using a hand-operated electronic device while he was behind the wheel.

Scott Brown, a spokesman for the NHL team, says the club only became aware of the court order on Wednesday, but that the issue has been dealt with and the tickets have been paid.

Kane returned to Winnipeg earlier this week to get ready for the team's upcoming training camp.
