Former Blue Rodeo keyboard player James Gray has died at the age of 52.

The musician suffered a fatal heart attack while walking home after playing a gig in Toronto on Monday, according to his mother, who confirmed the news to Exclaim.ca.

Gray joined country rockers Blue Rodeo in the early 1990s as Bob Wiseman's replacement, having previously played in various bands with the group's drummer Glenn Milchem.

He recorded and toured with the group for over a decade before parting ways with his bandmates in 2005 after the release of the band's album Are You Ready.

The son of Jerry Gray, the leader of folk group The Travellers, James played in numerous bands over the years, including the Rheostatics, N.O.M.A. and Whitenoise.
