While agreeing that Cory Monteith's sudden death earlier this month was an untimely tragedy, Sophia Bush feels that his fatal overdose was even more shocking because he had just seemed to turn a corner.

"When someone who I think is such a light in your industry, when something that devastating happens, nobody expected it," Bush said yesterday on HuffPost Live. She crossed paths with Monteith at last year's Do Something Awards, at which the Glee star was a celebrity honoree, and she is hosting this year's ceremony, airing tonight on VH1.

"I don't know how to phrase it, because you don't want to say that you're expecting that from anyone," the former One Tree Hill star said. "Sadly, I think, there are some people who we watch as they sort of unravel, and if something like that were to happen, you'd be sad but not necessarily shocked. You'd just be so sad that they never got help."

"And it's, I think, more emotional for the people who knew him and loved him because he was working toward that," Bush continued. "He had just gone to get help."

Monteith, who talked candidly about struggling with substance abuse throughout his life, starting when he was a teenager, voluntarily checked into rehab in March. He walked his first—and, sadly, last—red carpet after treatment with girlfriend Lea Michele at the 12th annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in L.A. in June.

The 31-year-old actor was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room on July 13. Cause of death was determined to be a toxic mixture of heroin and alcohol.

Bush tweeted that night upon hearing news of Monteith's death, "I saw him a few weeks ago in NY, looking so happy. heartbreaking… #corymonteith" And she hopes that, if nothing else, the tragedy sends a loud and clear message that this can happen to anybody.

"I think, if anything, it signified to so many people—and hopefully to so many people who loved him from around the world, who watched him, who looked up to him, who might be struggling—that addiction is serious and it is not to be taken lightly, and it comes for you in ways you can't imagine," the actress said Tuesday.

"I hope that there's some sort of push for people to realize that they need help, and maybe that they need more help than they think they do."

Michele, who helped put on a memorial for Monteith with Glee creator Ryan Murphy last week, broke her personal silence on Monday, tweeting, "Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support. Cory will forever be in my heart."

The singer-actress then tweeted today, "Spending the day surrounded by great friends.. Hope you all are having a good day.. Sending lots of love to you all.."

Sending love right back to you, Lea Michele.
