OTTAWA — Olympic medallist Derek Drouin and veteran shot putter Dylan Armstrong will lead Canada's team at the world track and field championships in Moscow next month.

Drouin, from Corunna, Ont., won bronze in high jump at last summer's London Olympics, Canada's lone track and field medal of the Games.

Armstrong, a Kamloops, B.C., native, was a silver medallist at last year's world championships.

There are 24 Olympians on Canada's 46-person roster, including heptathlete Jessica Zelinka and decathlete Damian Warner, both of London, Ont., and high jumper Michael Mason of Nanoose Bay, B.C. Zelinka is taking a break from the heptathlon this season and will only compete in the 100-metre hurdles.

"Our objective is to improve on the medal count and top-eight finishes we had at the 2012 Olympic Games," said Athletics Canada high performance director Scott MacDonald. "London saw a new generation of athletes stepping forward. In Moscow we are looking for those young athletes to take it to the next level by advancing through to finals, and to veterans to help lead the way to the podium."

The world championships run Aug, 10 to 18 at Luzhniki Stadium.
