Coming off a late-inning one run loss, the Toronto Blue Jays are hoping the number 13 will prove to be unlucky for Detroit Tigers starter Max Scherzer.
One night after the Jays allowed the Tigers to score an eighth inning run on route to a 7-6 victory, they are set to face Major League Baseball's leader in wins, who has also yet to lose a game.
Winners of nine of the last 11 games at home, the Jays will send Josh Johnson to the mound to oppose Scherzer.
Johnson has battled injuries and inconsistency all season for the Jays who sit in last place in the A.L. East, although they are just a game under .500.
Over his last two starts, the right-hander has allowed nine earned runs and surrendered six runs in 1.1 innings in his only previous matchup with the Tigers on April 11.
The Blue Jays come into the game battling injuries on a number of fronts with Adam Lind, Edwin Encarnacion and J.P. Arencibia all missing last night's contest. All three are considered day-to-day.
Scherzer is in the midst of the best undefeated start to a season since Roger Clemens began the 1986 with a 14-0 record.
He sits just three wins shy of the best undefeated start to a season by a starting pitcher in the live ball era (since 1920).
Detroit has struggled of late, losing six of their last eight games to fall a half game out of first place in the A.L. Central.
Reigning Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera who left last night's game with reported lower back tightness is expected to be back in the lineup tonight. He has six home runs in his last eight games, hitting .355 over that span.
