OTTAWA — Canadian sprinter Esther Akinsulie was suspended for six months on Wednesday due to an anti-doping rule violation.
A urine sample collected during out-of-competition doping control on Feb. 8 revealed the presence of the prohibited diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport said in a statement.
Akinsulie waived her right to a hearing, admitted the rule violation and accepted the sanction, the CCES said. The Toronto resident is ineligible to participate in any capacity with any sport signatory to the Canadian Anti-Doping Program and cannot train with teammates.
Akinsulie was eligible for a reduced sanction as she was able to establish how the substance entered her system and satisfied the CCES that her use of hydrochlorothiazide was not for performance-enhancing reasons, the CCES said.
The sanction will end Aug. 8.
The 29-year-old Winnipeg native has participated at several national track and field championships over her career. She also competed in the women's 4×400 relay at the world championships in 2011 but did not make the final.
