Re: [SurroundSound] HDMI-questions

There are a bunch of threads about it on this site and others.  Also of note is that the ONLY HDMI port on the Oppo that carries DSD is HDMI 2.  You should set HDMI 1 to play only video (but ya still have to turn it off go figure) and HDMI 2 goes to the AVR.  HDMI 1 TV still needs to be off.  This is Oppo's weird implementation.  AFAIK I believe the newer ones have the same prob.  Just remember ya gotta set it up right and you shouldn't have too many issues.  HDMI 2 for audio...or be really adventurous and hear what the Oppo really sounds like and use the analog ports.  It will sound better than HDMI anyway.  Turn bitstreaming off when you listen to music (leave it on for movies)...while their HDMI implementation is good and denon is ok, HDMI has problems not the least of which is SQ.  You will get lots better bass and analog sound from the analog ports.  And you can mostly avoid the HDMI issues *again the TV still gotta be off even with analog. Good luck.

Oh, I have no doubt that HDCP is to blame, it's just always surprising to find yet another way they've set it up to be as silly as possible.

My TV is from 2010 I think and it will do the MC stuff.  It will not do the DSD however.  I still have to turn it off to play SACD's.  Blame the folks who put HDCP in HDMI.

Ah, it makes sense that newer TV's would be set up to handle that stuff better, but still its' surprising that all of this isn't set up so you can just say "this is just monitor, it doesn't need or use any audio", and then ignore it's audio capabilities. My TV is hooked up to HDMI out on my receiver, and audio return channel etc. is turned off on the receiver and every audio format I've tried has worked just fine. But then my player doesn't output DSD directly, it decodes it internally and outputs PCM, so maybe I'd have run into that if my player did that. (It's funny because previous Marantz players could output DSD but the receivers couldn't decode DSD, now the opposite is true! the Marantz players don't output DSD but if they did the receivers would be able to use it!. Talk about one hand not knowing what the other is doing!).

It depends on your TV of course.  For DSD absolutely--you have no choice.  For MC you should be able to get surround still using the DVI for stuff like DVD-A.  It sounds like that is what is happening unfortunately.  If yr DVD-A's are coming out as 2 channel that's what's happening.  Most newer TVs have MC passthrough which means it will retain the MC dolby or DTS signals or even PCM.  Basically if every disc ya got goes to 2 channel that is exactly what is happening.  You don't have lots of choices but maybe the component for navigation if that is the case.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  That's the easiest way to tell...everything will be 2 channel and DSD won't play.

So having _any_ TV hooked up (to the output of course) and on at the same time will prevent it from doing multi-channel? That's kind of crazy! Especially for things like DVD-Audio discs, some of which require you to use an onscreen menu to navigate! (Not to mention that some of them have video they put up on the screen while the audio is playing. I have a Led Zeppelin one that works this way).

I have an Oppo.  You will NOT get MC or DSD over HDMI or analog if one of the HDMI/DVI things is connected and/or powered on.  It is handshaking with your TV which is resulting in 2 channel PCM as that is what yr TV is capable of.  Turn off the TV while the HDMI is connected to it.  It's the only way you will get to hear your SACDs.  If you are using a DVI connection to navigate it will do the same thing.  Turn em off and you will be good to go if you have your settings correct on the AVR and the Oppo set to DSD.  You can also let the Oppo do the processing and output over analog ports, the caveat being that you STILL have to have the TV/Monitoring device OFF.

August Bleed brings up a good point, if you have anything connected to the receiver that the HDMI doesn't handshake with properly (even if your DVI monitor has HDCP it might not be talking to the receiver quite properly though the HDMI adapter you're using) it'll default to crappier settings.

Also, There were a few typo's in my response as I was writing it on my phone on the train on my way to work: here's what it should have said (nothing major but I figure it'll be slightly more understandable with fewer typos):

"Have you checked to see if your new receiver has an option called "auto" (or something like that? My Marantz, which is closely related to Denon, has this option for sound modes and it generally means you don't have to worry about changing sound modes on the receiver. Whatever signal it gets sent over HDMI (or optical, etc) it recognizes it (PCM, DSD, DTS, DD, etc) and just works properly. Worth looking into before you return it."

Could be that it is handshaking (or more importantly NOT handshaking) with one of the devices (likely the DVI connection) and not the other.  Or as I said NOT handshaking which will result in no sound.  Anytime HDMI is connected and you are playing an SACD you gotta have the TV off and/or the extra HDMI/DVI thing OFF.  If it detects either one it will only play PCM.  It will also only play in 2 channel as it is handshaking somehow with a 2 channel device not the AVR.

Hi at all and a happy Eastern...

while there a a few free days, I decided to start with a hardware-upgrade.
You know, my equiptment is verry old-styled, analog.
Besides my OPPO 93 (with ISO-FW) I´ve an AV-Receiver YAMAHA RX V1500
(no HDMI, 5 channel analog inputs, optical and coax inputs and output and component video-connections)
and my TV is also an "oldie" (plasma, but no HDMI).
There is also a mediaplayer "Xtreamer-Sidewinder" (MK1), optical connected and my files are on a synology NAS.

So I ordered before Easter an new AV-Receiver DENON AV 3313.
The first step was the 3313´s setup. It´s a bit terrible without a GUI, so I used my PC-Monitor
(DVI with HDCP). The OPPO´s 2nd HDMI I connected with the 3313, the OPPO´s output I setup to DSD.
I put in an (original!) SADC (DSOTM) an on the screen of the 3313 shows a light "DSD",
but NOTHING was to hear. :-(
So I changed to PCM and it works, as I also setup the 3313 input to "Multi-channel"
(there are 2 possibilities: DTS and Multi-Channel), it shows PCM Multichannel.
A DVD-A was also with that setup playable.
Now I took a DVD-V with DTS-Tracks and there was only "Stereo" shown.
As I switched the Input-Mode of the 3313 to "DTS" there was
"DTS-Multichannel" shown and all channels was to hear.

Much more difficulte was the connetion of my mediaplayer:
you have to decide, wich output formant you want to playback via HDMI:
2 channel DTS-downmix (forgetable), DTS, DTS-HD (and so on) OR Multichannel PCM.

If I want to playback Multi-Channel-FLACs, I´ve the output of my mediaplayer to change to
Multicannel-PCM, the 3313 also, otherwise I hear only stereo.
If I want to playback a video (mkv with DTS), I´ve both to swith to DTS.
I can the mediaplayer connect via fiber to the 3313, but there is no PCM-Multichannel support, only DTS (and AC3).

There are 2 possibilities:
Composite (video) and optical(audio) for watching filme (terribel!) and listenig audio (Multichannel PCM) via HDMI
OR
watching films via HDMI (HDTV with DTS and so on) and listening audio only in stereo.

To change the setup by each using is impossible (because of "my other best part") ...

Are there an ideas besides this cases????
I´ll send back the 3313 after Easter, this is clear for me.
