VICTORIA -- Canada's Brad Jacobs maintained a perfect record at the world men's curling championships Monday with a 7-2 victory over Switzerland's Sven Michel.
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., skip is 4-0 heading into a night draw action against Brady Clark of the U.S.
Jacobs, 27, is trying to become the youngest Canadian to win a world title since Edmonton's Kevin Martin prevailed at the age of 24 in 1991. Canada has won the past three world crowns.
Jacobs, making his first appearance at worlds, did not have much difficulty with Michel (3-2), whose rink was locked in a second-place logjam with five other teams after Sunday's play. The game lasted only eight ends.
In other afternoon action, Rui Liu's China quartet doubled Russia 6-3 and Sweden's Niklas Edin beat Jiri Snitil's Czech squad 7-4. Both China and Switzerland improved to 4-1, while the Czechs fell to 2-3 following their second loss of the day.
Norway's Thomas Ulsrud beat Finland's Aku Kauste 7-4 in the other afternoon game. Norway improved to 3-1 while Finland remained winless in five games. Russia has gone six games without a win.
Canada led 6-1 after five ends and 6-2 after six. When Jacobs made a runback for one more in the eighth, Michel shook hands.
In earlier action, Scotland beat the Czech Republic 7-3 as David Murdoch's rink rebounded after losing to Jacobs on Sunday night. Murdoch improved his record to 3-1.
In other early play, China beat Japan 7-5 and Sweden edged the U.S. 7-6 in an extra end. The Americans dropped to 1-3.
Meanwhile, Denmark (2-2) downed Russia (0-4) by a count of 8-5.
