PITTSBURGH -- Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson will be out indefinitely after he suffered a lacerated left Achilles tendon against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.
The Senators said on Twitter that Karlsson would require surgery.
Karlsson, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, was killing a penalty when Penguins forward Matt Cooke pinned him against the left-wing boards. It appeared as if Cooke's left skate could have made contact with the back of Karlsson's lower leg, below the calf but above the foot.
Karlsson appeared in sharp pain and immediately headed to the dressing room.
There was no penalty called on the play on Cooke.
Karlsson's six goals lead all NHL defensemen.
