The Toronto Star writes that when Owen Nolan finally retired, he knew he needed to do something other than just sit around his home in San Jose.
So the former NHL power forward turned to one of his other passions — the outdoors. This summer, he and his buddies, along with some former teammates, will be catching fish and doing a little hunting on a new show called Sportsman 360 TV.
Ten shows have been shot and another three will be filmed this spring, with the 30-minute episodes being aired on Wild TV in Canada in July. The first season will have seven fishing and six hunting episodes; several U.S. networks are also in negotiations for the show.
Filming began near the end of last summer in California and Ontario.
"I think people will be surprised just how much humour is in the show," Nolan, 40, said from San Jose, where he played eight of his 18 seasons. "Everybody has that one friend whom you're really competitive with, and we start razzing each other in one of the shows."
Nolan had appeared on some episodes of Fish TV about three years ago. He enjoyed the experience and entertained the idea of doing another show. After failing to crack the Vancouver Canucks' roster at training camp last season, he decided it was time to pursue it when he retired several months later.
"I ended up with a lot more free time when I retired, and anybody who knows me knows how much I love the outdoors. I thought it would be fun to put a show together," said Nolan, who scored 422 goals and 885 points in 1,200 games with seven different NHL teams, including the Maple Leafs. "I knew I just couldn't sit at home and do nothing, so I thought, 'Let's go down this avenue.'
"I don't come off as an expert. I do have some knowledge but I think it's more a way of showing people that you don't have to be an expert to try different things. That's where the name comes in — it's 360. We're going to try everything. Some things I've done before but some things I'm doing for the first time. I want to show people they can get outdoors and try new adventures."
"It's more about getting to know myself and the guests . . . you learn the personalities away from the game," Nolan said. "Joe (Thornton) had never tuna fished before so it was a new experience for him."
"We intend to venture outside of North America (next season)," Nolan said. "Not every show has a celebrity, sometimes it's just friends of mine who I hang out in town with. People will relate. . . . It's the same thing they do with their buddies."
