The Calgary Sun points out Sven Baertschi didn't accompany his Calgary Flames teammates on a six-day road swing due to a hip flexor injury, and the rookie left-winger quickly learned it's quite lonely around the Saddledome when the rest of the boys are away.
"I spent a lot of time here. Usually I was here from 8 a.m. to about 2 p.m. getting treatment and working out," Baertschi said.
"I feel like I got stronger. When you can't do something with your legs, there's other body parts you can use. I spent a lot of time on the hand-bike and the air-bike, too. A lot of weights, everything.
"It was a long week. The guys were gone, so being by myself in the weight-room, just pushing around weight, isn't that much fun. But you've got to do something to get stronger."
Baertschi will be happy when he's back in the lineup. After struggling a bit early in the season, the former Portland Winterhawks standout tried to study the intricacies of Bob Hartley's system while watching the road games on the tube last week.
"It's not much fun to sit at home and watch the game. You want to be there. You want to play," Baertschi said.
"But for me, because we didn't have much time to get the system going (in a condensed training camp), I took everything as a lesson.
"System-wise, you can learn a lot, so I was pretty much watching the game just to learn."
