LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A former NHL player has been sentenced in Las Vegas to four to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a girl over a four-year period.

With the girl's mother sobbing in court, Michael McBain apologized Wednesday and said he was willing to accept any sentence the judge imposed.

Clark County District Court Judge David Barker rejected a lesser sentence recommended by state officials, noting that the assaults took place over a long period.

The 36-year-old McBain was drafted by the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning in 1995, and played for the team from 1997 to 1999. He played two seasons in the United Kingdom before signing with the minor league Las Vegas Wranglers.

McBain, from British Columbia, pleaded guilty in September to reduced charges of felony attempted sexual assault and attempted lewdness with a minor under 14.
