REGINA — Fortune has smiled on Dan Mangan once again.
The B.C. folk-rocker took home a trio of trophies at the 2012 Western Canadian Music Awards on Sunday, continuing a winning streak that included a pair of Juno Awards earlier this year.
Mangan snagged the Rock Recording and Independent Album prizes for his critically lauded third release Oh Fortune. He was also named Songwriter of the Year for the track Post-War Blues.
"This is really ridiculous," said the soft-spoken Vancouver troubadour, who shared his awards with his three bandmates.
"Amazing. This is actually like the fifth time I've been at the awards, but the first time I've been here to pick up an award."
His three-for-three sweep at this year's WCMAs actually tops his record at the Junos, where he won the New Artist and Alternative Album categories, but lost in the Songwriter and Video races. His previous album Nice, Nice, Very Nice also earned a trio of WCMAs in 2010 in the Independent Album, Roots Solo Recording and Songwriter categories, but was performing in New York that night and accepted his awards via text messages read by the host.

Mangan wasn't the only multiple winner at the 10th annual WCMAs, held in Regina. Alberta musician and studio whiz Russell Broom, whose resume includes work with everyone from Jann Arden to Robbie Williams, triumphed in both the Producer and Engineer categories.
Other major winners included pop sensation Carly Rae Jepsen, whose EP Curiosity won the Pop Recording prize (she was on tour with Justin Bieber and did not attend the ceremony); B.C.'s Swollen Members, who grabbed the Rap/Hip-Hop Recording honours for Dagger Mouth; and Saskatoon alt-country outfit Deep Dark Woods, whose album The Place I Left Behind won the Roots Duo/Group Recording contest, earning Saskatchewan's only victory of the night.
Thanks to Mangan's threepeat, B.C. came out on top with 11 wins in the 28 artistic and industry awards presented at separate ceremonies over the weekend. Manitoba was right behind with 10 trophies, while Alberta took five. The Yukon earned a single victory when singer-songwriter Sarah McDougall's The Greatest Ones Alive captured Roots/Duo Group Recording honours.
Saskatchewan rockers The Northern Pikes were inducted into the hall of fame before closing the three-hour event with a 20-minute performance. Other artists who took the stage over the course of the night included Mangan,
Said the Whale (who had initially led the pack this year with four nominations but went home with just a prize for Album Design), Jason Plumb and Rah Rah.
The WCMA gala capped the annual BreakOut West Festival and Conference, organized by the Western Canadian Music Alliance to celebrate and foster regional musicians and bands. Next year's event will be held in Calgary.
