TORONTO - Toronto FC captain Torsten Frings will miss the remainder of the 2012 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his hip.

The team announced Wednesday that Frings, a former German international, will return for pre-season action in 2013.

Frings played all 90-plus minutes of Toronto's 3-1 CONCACAF Champions League loss to Houston in late August, but he was left off the roster for the Reds' last two Major League Soccer games, suggesting the veteran midfielder had suffered a nagging injury.

Frings is in his second season with Toronto. In two seasons, he has started in 33 league matches, scoring two goals and adding three assists for Toronto FC.

He came to Toronto along with Dutch striker Danny Koevermans as a designated player and made an immediate impact with the Reds, showing class and composure in the midfield.

But both he and Koevermans have struggled with injuries since coming to the MLS. Frings suffered a shoulder injury at the beginning of the season, and Koevermans suffered torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a July 14 match. There is no timetable for the Dutchman's return.

Toronto FC is mired in last place in the MLS standings.
