Re: [SurroundSound] Re: The DR Masters

I haven't commented yet but Tab you are way off beam. The hub is exactly what you said - a bunch of guys archiving what they have collected. You are welcome to have a photograph of my collection and see how much I've spent on the industry that to me includes far too many people that have lost sight of what the music industry customers require, but that's another story.

The facts are:

The hub has cost me 232 euros for another two years and is hosted elsewhere  - I did not want the hassle of looking after a box. Going back two years ago the hub was finished. Period. I was left to sort it out in two weeks.
So I forked out the money and asked everyone to contribute. Same today and the reality is this - I've just lost my job at the age of 55 and I need to look after what money I have, but I've asked if folks want to throw in 5 euros/6 USD to contribute (what's that - 5 mp3 tracks from Amazon?) to keep it going. So far I've raised about 120 euros so I will still have to put my bit in but it's worth it for what it gives people.

As for the DR masters, which I beleive that you are laterally referring to. They are nothing to do with me whatsoever - but let me tell you a story about the music industry. I used to collect R2R tape recorders and still have a collection of around 25. A while back I bought a box of ex studio tapes (from the guy who cleared a studio) off ebay - purportedly ex mix downs that had been "wiped". These tapes turned out to be studio master tapes, which incidently I've not shared with anyone.  From what I have been told these (the DR) tapes were similar.

Now three things. I have almost everything Bowie has done in Vinyl, cassette, CD, SACD and DVD-A - would you like a list? Secondly whatever the story, this gave us a chance to listen to history as never before. And guess what? Having listened to my CD's in comparison I feel once more that the music industry let me down; howvever like my vinyl freak friends have been saying for a while the original vinyls were closer to the sound as it was intended, so much for digital eh?. Finally, this is what the hub does - we are an archive - we save what others may of obtained  - Look at Parson's DSOTM - been around on the hub since day one - but guess what crowd went out and purchased it again in a diffferent format; yes you've guessed it the guys in this group and on the hub.

So to recap
1. doing a rant won't pay the bills but if you want ownership of the hub I'll willingly give it to you today
2. I'm not making a bean - in fact at the mo' about 100 euros down
3. We are like a library, an archive, and are definitely not about piracy and in fact the more orginal studio masters we get, the more the chance that they will be preserved for our kids to hear without compression in both the lossy and the lossless sense
4. Finally some of your other comments appear to not make sense; I only proffer my opinion as a steer I don't not create anything

Guys thanks for diving in; I think an apology is perhaps in order.

Dude... you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.  The "HUB" was ending.  The server lease where it was parked was through and the guy who paid for it was retiring.  Guess what... running a hub is NOT free.  It does not just exist of our collected will power alone.  Lokks stepped in to maintain what a very select group of people were getting the benefit of.  The option was for a 2 year lease and he asked if members would contribute to that cost.  I was not a member at the time, but I am one of those initial 10-20 people who funded your "free" hub.  Now, 2 years later, lease renewal time is here.  We members have the OPTION at this time to contribute.  No one has been forced to contribute.  No one is charged to become a member... its free.  There is no mandatory donation at signup.  Lokks is not making money... You're just plain wrong.

As for the DR masters.  They are not Lokks'.  They were released by an old member of this scene.  This is just his little way of saying that some newly liberated rarities are available in the most discrete way possible... and hopefully spur discussion as to their quality.  From my understanding these are not masters as released... rather alternate mixes.  But then I haven't heard them yet.

Lastly... the best way to preserve our "free" hub (however indisputably noble our efforts may be) is to keep it OUT of the spotlight.  You and I may not see piracy, but the labels see piracy differently (and I would argue incorrectly and unsustainably).  Artists can't even post alternate mixes on their own Youtube pages!  You think they'll back up your right to archive?!?

So to recap.  Free isn't always free.  In fact, such as cases like the purchase and liberation of the E. Power Biggs SACD or the recent Bernstein's Mass compilation, it can be downright expensive.  Anyways...

First of all, The thread -- the hub -- the concept -- is an alternative for sharing free surround formats besides other available internet methods. In this sense, it's not piracy. Guys just sharing what they love. Go out and buy the original. Period. We're a small number of users who wish to sample surround sound legally that isn't otherwise available.

But what the hell are you doing?

You've added this extra cost to opt in. What the hell?

Also, you act like your copy of a copy is superior to studio masters. What the hell? So I sampled your genius and now I'll buy the studio copy. Wow! They suck?

This was not the goals of this group ever. Ever. Ever. Ever.

We share inferior copies of surround sound mixes to inspire other members to buy the original. Period. That's cool. You like it. You buy it. And I think that's legal. And hopefully the studio will give us more music in this format.

We were never a pirate organization. You've somehow misunderstood this. Please cease and desist. Your desire to make money off this is wrong. Who are you anyway?  What the hell is wrong with you?

Despite your critical listening ears, our hub could be so much more! Didn't you learn anything from our founders? Shame on you lokks. I risk our friendship, but someone here needs to tell you straight. What the hell is going on? Are you trying to kill us all?

I got the impression (before I'd heard you refer to them as such) that they were just R2R...is there something I missed in there?  The file sizes are quite small for an SACD.  Just an observation--haven't heard them...the file sizes threw me so I never bothered to listen.  I figured they were on the order of something else I have from another band that was reel to reel but clearly a consumer deck and presumably a consumer edition (?)...sounds great and worn.  Are these like that?

So the question arises; who has heard these and what do you think?
