The Edmonton Eskimos' backfield could get a major boost in the coming days.
Canadian running back Jerome Messam, who was cut by the Miami Dolphins last week, is expected to rejoin the Eskimos, according to Sportsnet's Arash Madani.
Preliminary discussions on a contract extension are currently underway. He could join the team as soon as next week.
Messam will be cleared to return to the CFL once the NFL's 10-day waiver window closes.
The 27-year-old Toronto native will join a crowded backfield in Edmonton that includes recently acquired Cory Boyd and Hugh Charles.
Messam ran for 1,057 yards with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2011 and was named the CFL's most outstanding Canadian.
He signed with the Dolphins in February and finished with reception one for 10 yards and one rush for minus-2 yards in two pre-season games.
