TORONTO - Brett Cecil will be returning to the Toronto Blue Jays once the minor-league season ends and manager John Farrell said Friday they intend to use the left-hander out of the bullpen.

Cecil has made 74 starts for the Blue Jays over the past four seasons but has been inconsistent in the role while struggling through some velocity issues.

A closer during his college days at the University of Maryland, the thinking is pitching him in shorter stints should give his stuff a boost and his splits suggest he'd make a good lefty specialist able to work through righties when needed.

Lefties have hit .230/.284/.371 against him while righties have gone.289/.353/.495.

"It will be interesting to see his ability to attack lefties … it will be interesting to see how his stuff plays up in shorter stints," said Farrell. "If there's an uptick in a shorter role and the ability to attack with a solid breaking ball to a lefty, I think it's time to take a look at him in a different role."

LAWRIE MAKES GAINS: Brett Lawrie (oblique) reported some improvement Friday and began to swing the bat a little bit.

"That doesn't give us any point in the calendar to say he's ready to get into games but he's feeling better," said Farrell.

Lawrie has been on the DL since Aug. 4.

J.P. Arencibia (broken right hand) and his return seems to be down to a matter of how soon at this point.

"The 10th seems to be a realistic timeframe but it could very well be before then," said Farrell.
