The Vancouver Canucks have given prospect Nicklas Jensen permission to start playing pre-season games with AIK of the Swedish Elite League, according to The Vancouver Sun. Jensen, Vancouver's first-round pick (29th overall) in the 2011 entry draft, has been training with AIK, a Stockholm-based team, since late July, but was not expected to play in any pre-season games before attending the Canucks' training camp.
"There has been a slight change in plans and that took effect today (Tuesday)," said Jensen's agent, Anton Thun. "Up until this point in time Nicklas was not playing in exhibition games for AIK. As of today the Vancouver Canucks have given him permission to play in games."
Jensen is expected to see his first action this weekend when AIK plays in a pre-season tournament in Sundsvall, Sweden The 19-year-old Dane told AIK's website that he is excited about playing.
Thun said Jensen will attend the Canucks training camp next month, provided it is not postponed due to a NHL lockout. Some Swedish media reports had suggested Jensen was not planning on attending the Vancouver camp.
"In relation to training camp and him coming over, there has been no change," Thun said. "Hopefully he makes the team and doesn't have to go back to play for AIK. That wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But that's the plan, he comes to camp."
Thun said the only scenario where Jensen might not attend Vancouver's training camp would be if the season was shortened because of a lockout.
"If the season doesn't start until February maybe he won't come over," Thun said. "But at this point, that is purely conjecture."
The Swedish Elite League begins its regular-season schedule in mid-September, at about exactly the same time Vancouver's training camp is scheduled to start.
