{allcanada} Sixteen players file for salary arbitration

Sixteen players filed for salary arbitration by Thursday's deadline, and one — St. Louis Blues winger David Perron— already agreed to a deal.

Last year, 24 players filed and all but one —Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber— settled before his hearing. In 2004, the last offseason in which a new collective-bargaining agreement was being negotiated, 67 players filed.

This year's list includes Perron's teammate, T.J. Oshie; Edmonton's Sam Gagner, who had an eight-point game in February, and San Jose's T.J. Galiardi and Colorado's Jamie McGinn, who were traded for each other. New Jersey Devils defenseman Mark Fayne, who had wrist surgery and will be out until late October, also filed.

Players will have hearings from July 20 to Aug. 4 in Toronto.

Both sides submit a contract figure based on statistically similar players and an independent arbitrator can choose either number or something between.

Filing guarantees that a deal will be reached during the summer, either with a hearing or a settlement beforehand.

"We're hoping that we can work out a contract with (Oshie)," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said in a conference call. "We have had dialogue. The good thing for St. Louis Blues fans is that everyone will be in training camp."

Perron and the Blues reached a four-year, $15.25 million deal on Thursday.

He scored 21 goals in 57 games after returning from a concussion that cost him more than a year. He had no further head issues last season.

Armstrong said the four-year deal provided a little risk on both sides because of the concussion history and because Perron might be worth more than $4.5 million in the final year of his contract if he had taken a shorter deal and continued to show offensive improvement.

"Ultimately, what we did talk about was our goal for him is to stay healthy and produce the way we need him to produce to be a successful team," Armstrong said.
