The Montreal Canadiens addressed their need for physical forwards on the first day of free agency, adding Colby Armstrong and Brandon Prust.
Armstrong signed a $1 million, one-year deal with the Habs a day after the Toronto Maple Leafs bought out the final year of his contract. Two hours later, they would add forward Brandon Prust on a four-year $10 million contract.
The 29-year-old Armstrong appeared in 29 games last year, scoring one goal and two assists. In addition to his Montreal salary, he will actually earn $1 million from Toronto as a result of the buy-out.
Originally selected in the first round (21st overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, Armstrong has scored 87 goals and added 117 assists in 439 career NHL games between the Penguins, Maple Leafs and Atlanta Thrashers.
Prust, 28, scored five goals and added 12 assists in 82 games with the New York Rangers in 2011-12.
A hard-nosed grinder, Prust has scored 24 goals and 39 assists in 279 career NHL games with the Rangers, Phoenix Coyotes and Calgary Flames.
He was originally drafted by the Flames in the third round (70th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
