The Toronto Blue Jays are one of three teams interested in acquiring Miami Marlins third baseman Hanley Ramirez, according to various reports.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today confirmed to Baseball Central @ Noon on Sportsnet 590 The Fan Tuesday that the Blue Jays, along with the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics, are exploring the possibility of trading for Ramirez.
"Everybody's seeing what they can get for him," Nightengale said. "It would be foolish not to jump in and see what the Marlins want for him."
Nightengale believes the Blue Jays could make a strong push for the three-time all-star, who can play several infield positions.
The Oakland #Athletics, desperate for infield help, have jumped into trade talks for #Marlins Hanley Ramirez, joining #BlueJays and #RedSox.
The 28-year-old is currently not in the Marlins' lineup because of an infection he developed in his finger after punching a cooling fan in the dugout and not taking medication for it.
"Everybody knows the Marlins are frustrated and want to deal Ramirez ... The Blue Jays know what a great athletes he is. I mean he could play any position on the field pretty much and they would love to get him as well," Nightengale added.
In 92 games played this season, the Dominican is hitting .246 with 14 home runs and 47 RBI.
Ramirez, who has faced some criticism for being unprofessional, will make $15.5 million next season and $16 million in 2014.
The Marlins traded infielder Omar Infante and pitcher Anibal Sanchez to the Detroit Tigers on Monday and seem to be in the process of preparing for next season.
The Blue Jays begin a three-game series against the Athletics at the Rogers Centre on Tuesday.
