Last year, I bought a CD-R transfer of a classic pop album sourced from Quad open reel tape marked as 24 Bit.(famous transfer expert , usually one of the best) I've had a 2 channel LP and CD of this for years so I am very familiar with the recording and the Quad version sounded pretty good to me.(Nothing objectionable) Later I saw then DL the same Quad album with a file size less than 40% of the CD-R's content. When I burned then played it on the same player,it sounded SO much better than the CD-R .Clearer and more discrete. Unusual but not unique. Smaller file sizes can sound better if any step in the transfer is performed better. --
