Especially as the discussion here is mostly about audio signals, not video,
a 'well equipped HTPC' isn't necessary, if you're sending a digital
signal out. A simple netbook or laptop will do. You're basically
offloading the heavy work to the device(s) that has the DAC.

Again, the soundcard is not a huge issue today, if you are send a digital
signal out. (Which many people do with the Oppo too, bypassing its DAC)
Even '$50' ones can do that quite well. (Cost of computer parts does not
necessarily reflect their quality -- economies of scale being what they
are) I can get bit-perfect digital output from mine, which is an
integrated 'card' on a 3-year old, <$400 laptop. Using free software.
