{allcanada} Hockey coach suspended for allowing team to study

Bare Necessities

On the surface this doesn't look like a good one for junior hockey in Canada.

Brian Cranford, coach of the Mount Pearl Junior Blades was suspended for a year and fined $2,000 by Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador for his team's failure to show up for the opening ceremony of a tournament.

Cranford told CBC News that his players were studying and he advised officials that his team would not be present for the opening.

"We had a good reason for not going," Cranford said. "We're right in the middle of university exams....These are junior kids, they're 18, 19, 20 years old. Because of our schedule, we had real issues trying to get a team iced for every game."

Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador officials say the rules were clear. Cranford, a volunteer coach, failed in his appeal to have the suspension and fine repealed.
