After losing RB Martell Mallett for the season due to a torn Achilles, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed free agent tailback Avon Cobourne, who was released by the Tiger-Cats in February.
In his lone season in Hamilton, Cobourne rushed for 961 yards and eight touchdowns while adding 50 catches for 459 yards through the air.
Prior to last season, Cobourne spent five seasons with the Montreal Alouettes.
Cobourne became the Alouettes' starting running back in 2008, finishing the season with 1,557 all-purpose yards and was named a CFL East Division all-star. The following season, he rushed for 1,214 yards and 13 touchdowns, culminating in CFL All-Star recognition and being named the MVP of the 2009 Grey Cup. In his final season in Montreal, Cobourne had 956 yards rushing and over 550 yards receiving in 15 games.
Mallett needed to be helped from the field by training staff when he went down with the injury on Thursday. He was then sent to hospital for further evaluation.
The Ticats have already said that Mallett will undergo surgery and will likely miss the 2012 season.
