MONTREAL -- Defender Karl Ouimette has become the first academy player to be signed to a Major League Soccer contract by the Montreal Impact.
The Terrebonne, Que., resident was captain of the club's under-21 team this season. He can play central defence or at fullback.
The six-foot Ouimette, who turns 20 on June 18, joined the Impact's development program in 2009.
He is the second local player on the 30-man roster after midfielder Patrice Bernier of Brossard, Que.
