Canada has its own lords of the dance, and they are called Sagkeeng's Finest.
In what certainly was a significant upset (personal rooting interests notwithstanding), the three-teen team of traditional dancers from Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba was crowned the champion of Canada's Got Talent Monday on Citytv.
When the results were announced, the members of Sagkeeng's Finest - Dallas Courchene, Brandon Courchene and Vince O'Laney - grabbed each other and hopped around in an exuberant circle.
"This is the best feeling that I have had in my life - and everybody else's life," said Brandon Courchene, who we will excuse for speaking for the room.
Sagkeeng's Finest added tap for the first time to its traditional dance routines in the final performance show for Canada's Got Talent on Sunday. While the last performance by Sagkeeng's Finest may not have been the most polished of the 12 finalists, it was perhaps the most bold. Maybe that made the difference when the votes were tallied and the result was revealed on Monday.
The other two acts to advance to the final three were Freshh, a seven-member dance group from Vancouver, and Angry Candy, a five-member rock band from Moncton.
Judges for Canada's Got Talent were Martin Short, Measha Brueggergosman and Stephan Moccio. Guests on the finale included Short's alter-ego Jiminy Glick (in a pre-taped bit with Canada's Got Talent host Dina Pugliese), Hedley and Jackie Evancho.
For the victory, Sagkeeng's Finest receives $100,000, a trip to the island of Tobago and a new Nissan GT-R (note to Sagkeeng's Finest: Don't try to drive the car to Tobago). Also, Sagkeeng's Finest secures a performance spot on Citytv's televised New Year's bash.
