MONTREAL -- Olympic-bound Eric Gillis surged away from Matt Loiselle over the final 800 metres Sunday to win the men's Canadian national half-marathon championships.
The Guelph, Ont., runner finished the 21-kilometre course in a time of one hour four minutes 38 seconds.
Loiselle, of Toronto, was eight seconds back, while Rejean Chiasson, also of Toronto, was third, 16 seconds back of Gillis.
Kate Bazeley of St. John's, N.L., took the women's race with a time of 1:16:34.
Leslie Sexton of London, Ont., was second in 1:16:54, while Erin Maclean of Beechville, N.S., was third (1:17:02).
Gillis, Dylan Wykes and Reid Coolsaet will run for Canada in the marathon at the London Olympics this summer.
