OSHAWA, Ont. -- John Kennedy, the first commissioner of the National Basketball League of Canada, has stepped down due to a family emergency.
The native of Windsor, Ont., oversaw the NBL's inaugural season, which completed last Sunday with the London Lightning defeating the Halifax Rainmen in a best-of-five series.
The NBL has seven franchises across Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario.
"First on behalf of the League I would like to send our thoughts and prayers to Mr. Kennedy and his loved ones," said league president Andre Levingston said in a statement Thursday. "We'd like to thank him for taking the helm and leading the League during its inaugural season."
Levingston added that the search will be ongoing for a replacement.
