It was a night of mistakes for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors as they fell to the Peterborough Petes 5-2 Friday in Ontario Hockey League action.
"I think we're still struggling too much with turnovers and that really cost us tonight," Mississauga general manager/coach James Boyd said. "They took advantage of our mistakes and that was the difference tonight."
Austin Watson scored the game winner, while shorthanded, and added an assist to lead the Petes (9-5-3).
Peter Ceresnak and Matt Puempel also recorded a goal and an assist while Slater Koekkoek and Lino Martschini scored singles for the Petes.
For Mississauga (10-5-2), Derek Schoenmakers registered a goal and an assist while Riley Brace also scored.
Peterborough's Andrew D'Agostini stopped 29 shots while Majors rookie Spencer Martin turned aside 35 pucks in a losing cause.
The Majors, who went the entire game without committing a minor penalty, were shutout on seven power-play opportunities.
"Going 0-for-7 on the power play won't win you too many games in this league," Boyd said. "On the other side of the ledger, we were taking too many penalties early in the season, but I thought we weren't nearly aggressive enough tonight."
Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Sarnia 6, Windsor 2; Plymouth 4, Barrie 1; Erie 3, Guelph 2 (SO); Sault Ste. Marie 3, Kingston 1; Kitchener 4 Niagara 3; London 4, Brampton 2; Ottawa 5, Owen Sound 1 and Sudbury 6, Oshawa 4.
At Mississauaga, Ont., Brace opened the scoring 2:29 into the game to give the Majors a 1-0 lead.
The game would stay 1-0 until 1:38 of the second period when Koekkoek tied it for Peterborough.
The Petes would take their first lead of the game when Martschini scored at 14:57 but Schoenmaker scored late in the period for the Majors to head into the second intermission tied at two.
Watson scored shorthanded just 3:13 into the third period to regain the lead for Peterborough and goals from Ceresnak and Puempel rounded out the 5-2 win for the Petes.
